Capturing moments

There is a specific kind of magic that arrives with spring. It’s in the way the light softens as it stretches across the fields, the first brave blooms peeking through the soil, and that unmistakable feeling of new beginnings in the air. When you are expecting, spring feels like the perfect mirror to your own story. You are in your own season of becoming, waiting for the moment your world shifts in the very best way. If you’re dreaming of capturing this fleeting chapter, I’ve put together a guide to help you prepare for your spring maternity photos, focusing on the connection, the beauty, and the quiet joy of the wait.

Dressing for the Season: Style Advice for Your Session

My goal for our time together isn’t just to take a picture of what you look like, but to capture how this season feels. What you wear plays can help create that timeless, ethereal vibe.

  • Embrace the Neutrals: Light, neutral tones, like creams, soft beiges, oatmeal, and muted pastels, are my favorite for spring. They allow the focus to remain on your connection and the glow of motherhood rather than being distracted by bold patterns. These shades catch the spring light beautifully, giving your images a soft, airy feel.
  • The Magic of Layers: Spring weather in Michigan can be a bit of a wanderer. Including layers is both practical and stylish. A chunky knit cardigan over a flowing dress or a soft colorful wrap adds texture and movement to your photos. Texture translates to feeling in a photograph. It makes the image touchable and warm.
  • Flow and Movement: Consider a dress with a bit of length or flow. Whether we are chasing the golden hour in a field near Ann Arbor or walking the bluffs Up North, fabric that moves with the wind adds a sense of grace and breath to your gallery. If dresses aren’t your style consider wearing bump-bearing jeans and layer with a cut top and jacket.

Answering Your Questions: Spring Maternity Photo FAQs

For soulful images, you want to choose a photographer who takes time to really see you and makes you feel comfortable in this season of change. Here are a few things most moms-to-be wonder about when they are looking for the right fit:

When is the best time to schedule my maternity shoot? Ideally, we want to aim for between 28 and 34 weeks. This is the “sweet spot” where your bump is beautifully defined, but you’re still feeling comfortable enough to move, laugh, and enjoy the experience.

What if the spring weather doesn’t cooperate? Nature is beautifully unpredictable! If we’re met with a rainy spring day, we can either lean into the moodiness of the clouds (which creates stunning, soft light) or we can move our session to the comfort of your home for a cozy, lifestyle feel.

Can my partner and other children join? Always. While we will certainly take time to focus on you and your bump, my heart is rooted in storytelling. Some of the most authentic images come from your toddler listening to their sibling in your belly or your partner stealing a quiet moment with you. Your family is part of this becoming too!

What should I look for in a maternity photographer? Look for someone whose work makes you feel something. Beyond the technical skills, you want someone who prioritizes emotion and storytelling. You deserve a photographer who offers a pause in your busy schedule. These photos shouldn’t be another task to check off, but instead offer a bit of time to simply be present in this wonderful chapter before the next one begins.

Let’s Tell Your Story

The bright greens of spring evoke the feeling of new beginnings for a maternity photo session on the bluffs.
