There are places that feel like summer, and then there is Empire. Maybe it’s the sound of waves rolling onto the shore at Empire Beach. Maybe it’s the way the evening light spills across Lake Michigan and turns everything gold. Or maybe it’s the feeling that time slows down here just enough for families to reconnect. As an Empire Family Photographer, I love helping families create images that feel as timeless as the shoreline itself. Whether you’re visiting for a week, spending the season at the lake, or gathering generations together for a reunion, Empire offers some of the most beautiful locations in Northern Michigan for family photos.

Why Empire is Perfect for Family Photos
Empire somehow manages to feel both expansive and intimate at the same time.

The dunes stretch toward the sky. Lake Michigan reaches to the horizon. Yet tucked between them are quiet trails, hidden beaches, historic buildings, and places where children can simply be children.
For me, as an Empire Family Photographer, this place feels like home. There’s a winding dirt road that slices through the forest and spills onto the sands of Lake Michigan. Along that road sits a historic family farm. This is the place where my family gathers to celebrate holidays, trade stories, and slow down long enough to breathe in the wild beauty of this place.
No matter where life has taken me, turning down Manning Road has always felt like coming home. The golden light through the trees, the sound of laughter bouncing off the bluffs, this is where comfort and belonging live side by side. Because the beauty of this place lives so deeply in my soul, I offer sessions here regularly.
That feeling is what inspired Manning Road Photography. It’s more than a name — it’s what I cultivate in my photography: warmth, connection, and the quiet joy of being home.
Family Photography Locations Near Empire
One of the greatest gifts of photographing families in Empire is the access to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
From towering dunes to wooded trails and shoreline vistas, the park provides endless opportunities for meaningful photographs that celebrate both family and place.
Empire Beach

Empire Beach is often the first place families think of when planning photos, and for good reason.
The broad sandy shoreline, gentle dunes, the iconic lighthouse and panoramic Lake Michigan views create a classic Northern Michigan backdrop. During summer evenings the light settles softly over the water, creating the kind of glow photographers dream about.
Children can run barefoot along the shoreline while parents enjoy a slower pace and beautiful lake views. The beach is well equipped with restroom facilities, a large playground, basketball court and across the street there is the calm quiet waters of Bar Lake with a dock perfect for cannonballs.
Esch Road Beach
Esch Road Beach feels a little more wild.
Located where Otter Creek meets Lake Michigan, it offers driftwood, dunes, open shoreline, and stunning sunset views. It is one of my favorite locations for families who love a natural, untouched feel.
The landscape changes throughout the year, making every session unique.
Empire Bluff Trail
For families seeking vistas and nature, the Empire Bluff Trail offers one of the most spectacular overlooks in all of Michigan.
The short hike leads to panoramic views of Lake Michigan and Sleeping Bear Dunes. The reward is breathtaking scenery and photographs that feel truly iconic. And for those with an adventurous spirit, the trail can be continued to the dramatic Treat Trail that ends on Norconk Rd.
Treat Farm Trail
Treat Farm Trail combines woods, meadows, and historic farmland.
This location feels especially magical during late summer and fall when grasses sway in the breeze and golden light filters through the trees. The hike can be a bit taxing, but the views from the top are breathtaking.
For families wanting a quieter, more organic backdrop, Treat Farm is a hidden gem.

Why Families Love Photos in Empire
Family photographs are never really about the beach, and as an Empire family photographer I document how this season feels. The phots tell the story of your family. They are about the way your ten-year-old still shouts “watch this mom” over the wind. The way your teenager lets down their guard and builds intricate castles in the sand. The way one summer becomes part of the story your family remembers for years to come.
Empire is the perfect place to preserve those moments, because it is the perfect place to create those moments.
