Capturing moments

Family enjoying a morning beach photo session near Traverse City on Lake Michigan.

There is something about time along the shore of Lake Michigan that invites us to slow down.  Maybe it’s the endless blue water stretching toward the horizon. Maybe it’s the rhythmic sound of waves rolling onto the shore. Or perhaps it’s the way a summer evening seems to linger a little longer here, encouraging us to put down our phones, kick off our shoes, and simply be together.  For families vacationing near Traverse City, beach photo sessions offer so much more than beautiful photographs. They become a chance to pause in the midst of a busy season of life and remember what it feels like to truly be together.

Why Families Love Beach Photo Sessions

Your camera roll will be full of snaps of your kids on the beach at the end of your trip. Enlisting a professional photographer will ensure you have a gallery that tells your story, and includes you!  The captured moments will bring back the feeling of your daughter’s hand wrapped around your finger, the way your toddler’s sticky curls cling to their neck at the end of the day.  A collection of moments that are captured as you lived them, joyfully and wonderfully together.

The feeling of Lake Michigan sand between your toes, the soft roll of freshwater waves as they lick the shore and carry laughter to the heavens. Families that love Lake Michigan beaches, know the magic they hold.  Northern Michigan is full of little gems that are great for beach photo sessions. Whether you want to wander down Esch Road, or settle on the rocks at Empire Beach, the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore provides so many stunning options for photographs.

Beach photo sessions are loved for the beauty of the scenery in the photos. But they are just plain fun.  The beach is a place for wild hair, splashing feet, and parents quietly noticing the love that makes their family so special.  These sessions are built on the feeling of freedom that summer brings.

Children splashing at the water’s edge.  Parents walking hand in hand.  Searching for Petoskey stones nestled in the sand.  Collecting treasures in little pockets.  Watching the waves roll in. Noticing the warm summer sun settles on your shoulders.  The result is a gallery filled with genuine connection and the feeling of a summer you’ll never want to forget.

The Best Beaches for Family Photos Near Traverse City

Esch Road Beach

Nestled near Empire, Esch Road Beach offers wide stretches of sand, rolling dunes, and stunning views of Lake Michigan. It feels peaceful and untouched, making it perfect for families seeking a more natural, relaxed setting.

Empire Beach

Empire Beach combines beautiful shoreline views with easy access for families traveling with young children. The calm atmosphere and expansive beach create endless opportunities for playful, candid photographs.  With a playground, lighthouse and dock across the street at Bar Lake, the possibilities are endless for a summer day full of sun and sand. Looking for a little challenge? Wander over to Sleeping Bear Surf & Kayak before the session to rent some paddle boards.

Frankfort Beach

Frankfort Beach offers one of Northern Michigan’s most charming waterfront settings. The beach itself is beautiful, but the surrounding town adds character and charm that makes every session feel unique.  Want to include a trip to the ice cream parlor to your session?  There’s nothing that makes my photographer’s heart happier.

Point Betsie Lighthouse

If you’ve ever dreamed of combining iconic Northern Michigan scenery with your family photographs, Point Betsie Lighthouse is hard to beat. The historic lighthouse, expansive shoreline, and breathtaking sunsets create a timeless setting that feels distinctly Up North.

Glen Haven

Glen Haven cannery is a great backdrop for these children running on the beach during a photo session.

The bright red cannery and the soft beach grass lead the way to a sandy beach. It is quietly nestled near the Sleeping Bear Dune climb and along the Heritage bike trail. This little beach is a perfect cove for playing, swimming and sunning.

Why Morning Beach Photo Sessions Are a Hidden Gem

Sandy toes in the gentle morning light during a beach family photo session.

While sunset often gets all the attention, morning beach photo sessions are one of my favorite options for families—especially those with young children.

The light is soft and golden.  The beaches are quieter.  The world feels peaceful before the day fully begins.  Instead of navigating crowds or keeping little ones awake past bedtime, morning sessions work with your family’s natural rhythm.

Most young children are already awake and full of energy first thing in the morning. They’re happy, curious, and ready to explore.  Parents are often surprised by how relaxed these sessions feel.

No rushing through dinner.  No worrying about overtired toddlers.  No trying to squeeze a session into the busiest part of the day.

Instead, you arrive at the beach while the shoreline is still quiet. The light dances across the water, the sand remains cool beneath your feet, and your children have the freedom to play and explore. The result is often a more intimate, connected session that captures your family at its very best.

What to Wear for Beach Photo Sessions

When styling your family for a beach session, think soft, timeless, and comfortable. The beauty of Lake Michigan becomes part of your color palette. Clothing should complement the landscape rather than compete with it. Some of my favorite choices are dusty blues and creams .  You can add some gentle color with sage green, blush or warm neutrals.

Flowing dresses photograph beautifully in the lake breeze. Choose lightweight fabrics help everyone stay comfortable.  Textured linen is a great beach fabric. But the styling of the session should allow your family to feel like themselves. You should dress to enjoy the day. If your feeling stuck, I’ll be happy to guide you. Because the best moments happen when you’re focused on each other—not an outfit.

What Happens During a Beach Session?

Families often worry about whether their children will cooperate. They worry that having a photo session with disrupt the leisure of their vacation. But the beauty of a beach photography session, is that it tucks seamlessly into your itinerary. Family photos at the beach are designed around connection, relaxation and joy.

A family beach session includes wandering, exploring, skipping stones, splashing in waves, and watching little ones discover (and bury) tiny treasures in the sand. This is the foundation of a beautiful beach photo session. Family photography sessions like this leave you with images that feel like your family. It creates art that holds inside it the laughter, the wonder and the connection of this season. And photos like that are priceless.

Beach Photo Sessions are More Than Beautiful Photos

Years from now, you won’t remember exactly what was on your vacation itinerary.  You may not remember where you ate dinner.  But you’ll remember how your family felt.  You’ll remember sandy feet.  Sticky sunscreen hugs.  The sound of your children’s laughter carried across the water.  You’ll remember the warmth of the sun on your skin and the way Lake Michigan seemed to stretch on forever.

That is the gift of beach photo sessions.  They create space to slow down.  To notice one another.  To savor the beauty of a fleeting season.  Creating photographs that bring you right back to those summer days along the shore.
