Capturing moments

Family sitting quietly enjoying Matthaei indoor gardens.

There are certain locations that make my job as a family photographer particularly easy.

Not because they require elaborate posing or perfectly behaved children. Quite the opposite.

They give families room to move, explore, laugh, wander, and simply be together. They give me interesting light and beautiful surroundings. And, ideally, they give us a little insurance against Michigan weather.

Matthaei Botanical Gardens in Ann Arbor checks all of those boxes.

If you’re looking for a beautiful place for family photos in Ann Arbor, Matthaei Botanical Gardens is one of my favorite options. The outdoor gardens are bursting with vibrant colors in the warmer months, while the indoor conservatory gives us something particularly valuable here in Michigan: a beautiful place to make photographs when the weather outside is less than cooperative.

And by “less than cooperative,” I mean rain, snow, freezing temperatures, or that special Michigan brand of February grey where the sky seems personally offended by the existence of sunlight.

The conservatory has a way of making you forget about all of that.

Why I Love Matthaei Botanical Gardens for Family Photos

There are plenty of pretty places in Ann Arbor. But pretty isn’t really enough for me.

When I’m choosing a location for a family photography session, I’m looking for somewhere that gives us something to do.

Children are not excited by being told to stand in a field and smile at a camera. Shocking, I know.

They want to move. They want to look around. They want to investigate things. They want to run ahead, come back, climb into a parent’s arms, notice something interesting, and occasionally ignore everything I have said.

Perfect.

That kind of movement gives us photographs that feel like your family rather than a collection of people who were temporarily instructed to stand next to one another.

Parents enjoy a moment together at Matthaei Botanical Gardens while children play freely in the background.

Matthaei Botanical Gardens gives us plenty to work with. There are plants, pathways, changing textures, beautiful architectural details, and opportunities for both wider family portraits and quieter little moments between people.

It works beautifully for a family with young children, but it also gives older kids plenty of room to be themselves.

And for extended family photos in Ann Arbor, I especially love having a location with enough visual variety that we can photograph the whole group together and then break things down into smaller combinations without every image looking like the last one.

Grandparents with grandchildren.

Siblings together.

Parents with their children.

The whole wonderfully complicated family tree.

Those smaller photographs are often some of my favorites.

Family Photos at Matthaei Botanical Gardens in Every Season

One of the biggest advantages of Matthaei is the variety.

Outside, the gardens change dramatically throughout the year. Spring brings fresh greens and new growth. Summer gives us lush foliage and abundant color. Fall brings all of those glorious Michigan tones that make you want to put everyone in sweaters and pretend you don’t mind the fact that winter is coming.

But the indoor conservatory is what makes Matthaei especially appealing for Ann Arbor family photography in winter.

You can be surrounded by green when everything outside is brown.

You can have beautiful light and colorful plants when the forecast says rain.

You can make family photographs without spending half the session wondering whether your toddler’s fingers are still attached to their hands.

That matters.

Because Michigan weather does not always care about our photography plans.

And while I’m perfectly happy to embrace a little weather when it adds something to the story, sometimes the best plan is simply to go somewhere warm.

The conservatory gives us that option.

Instead of canceling your family photos in Ann Arbor because of rain or snow, we can head inside and make something beautiful anyway.

A Little Color Goes a Long Way

One of the things I love most about photographing families at Matthaei is the color.

Family of four walking together through Matthaei Botanical gardens

There is something wonderfully alive about photographing a family surrounded by layers of green, especially during the months when Michigan itself feels a little… beige.

The conservatory gives us a rich backdrop without making the photographs feel overly staged. Leaves, branches, glass, pathways, and architectural details become part of the frame.

And because there is so much happening visually, I don’t need to manufacture moments.

I can watch.

A child reaching for a leaf.

A dad carrying a tired little one.

Siblings wandering ahead together.

A grandmother laughing at something only the kids understand.

A hand finding another hand without anyone thinking about it.

Those are the photographs I’m always looking for.

Not because everyone needs to look at the camera.

Because everyone doesn’t.

What About the Kids?

This is usually the question I get asked in one form or another:

What if my kids don’t cooperate?

My answer is usually some variation of, excellent.

Children are allowed to be children during my sessions.

I’m not a formal posing photographer, and I don’t expect your family to spend an hour performing happiness for my camera.

I’ll give you some direction. I’ll find the good light. I’ll help you know where to stand when it matters. I’ll suggest things to do together.

And then I’ll get out of the way.

The goal isn’t to create a gallery of everyone smiling directly at the camera.

Of course, we’ll get those photographs too. You should have a beautiful portrait of the whole family looking at the camera.

But I also want the photographs around it.

The ones where your daughter is laughing because her brother said something ridiculous.

The ones where your toddler has decided your lap is the best place in the entire botanical garden.

The ones where Grandma is holding a grandchild and you can see exactly how much they adore one another.

The photographs where everyone looks like themselves.

That’s where the good stuff usually lives.

Matthaei Works Beautifully for Extended Family Photos, Too

Extended family sessions can feel a little intimidating.

There are more people. More combinations. More grandparents, siblings, cousins, spouses, and children to organize.

And yes, someone will probably wander away at exactly the wrong moment.

This is why I like locations that give us room to work.

At Matthaei Botanical Gardens, we can start with the full family portrait and then move through smaller groupings. We can photograph the grandparents with their grandchildren, individual families, siblings, cousins, and all of the combinations that matter to you.

But we don’t have to spend the entire session lined up like a school photograph.

There is room for movement and interaction, which means we can create photographs that show the relationships between generations—not simply prove that everyone was present on the same Tuesday afternoon.

And honestly, those relationships are usually the reason you’re making these photographs in the first place.

What Should We Wear for Family Photos at Matthaei?

Because there is so much color and texture at Matthaei, I tend to recommend clothing that complements the environment rather than competing with it.

Think about texture, movement, and colors that feel natural together rather than trying to make everyone match.

Soft neutrals, warm earth tones, muted greens, blues, creams, rusts, and other colors that play nicely with the surroundings can work beautifully.

But you don’t need to dress everyone in beige because you’re having family photographs taken in a botanical garden.

Please don’t.

Your family should still look like your family.

The goal is a little polish—not a complete personality transplant.

And if you’re unsure what to wear, this is exactly the kind of thing I help with before your session.

Family Photos in Ann Arbor Don’t Have to Feel Like a Photoshoot

Child exploring the Matthaei indoor conservatory during family photography session.

This is probably the most important thing I want families to know.

You don’t need to arrive at Matthaei Botanical Gardens with a list of poses or a plan for how your children are going to behave.

You just need to show up.

I’ll take care of the rest.

We’ll walk. We’ll talk. We’ll explore. I’ll give you little prompts and things to do together when we need them, and I’ll watch for the moments that happen naturally.

Because that’s what I love about family photography.

The photograph isn’t always the moment everyone is looking at the camera.

Sometimes it’s the moment just before.

Sometimes it’s the moment immediately after.

Sometimes it’s the tiny hand reaching for yours while you’re walking to the next spot.

Those little things are easy to overlook when you’re busy living your life.

They are also the things I want you to have.

Planning Your Ann Arbor Family Photography Session

If you’re considering family photos at Matthaei Botanical Gardens, the time of year and time of day will help determine whether we spend the session primarily outdoors, indoors, or make use of both.

For warmer months, the outdoor gardens give us beautiful seasonal variety. In colder months or during inclement weather, the conservatory gives us a colorful, weather-protected alternative.

That’s one of the reasons I love having Matthaei in my collection of Ann Arbor family photography locations.

It gives us options.

And options are a very good thing when you’re planning family photographs in Michigan.

Because maybe the day you’ve chosen will be sunny and beautiful.

Maybe it will rain.

Maybe it will snow.

Maybe the forecast will change three times before breakfast.

We don’t have to know exactly what the day will bring to make beautiful photographs.

We just need a place that gives us somewhere to go.

And Matthaei Botanical Gardens does that beautifully.

The Beauty Is Already Here

I think family photography works best when we stop trying so hard to make the moment look like something it isn’t.

Your family doesn’t need to become quieter, more coordinated, or more photogenic before you deserve beautiful photographs.

You don’t need a perfectly behaved toddler.

You don’t need everyone to cooperate.

You don’t even need good weather.

You just need to be together.

I’ll bring the camera. I’ll find the light. I’ll watch for the moments that happen in between the ones we planned.

And somewhere among the leaves and laughter and wandering children, we’ll make photographs that feel like you.

Because the beauty is already here.
